"If" by e.e. cummings
If freckles were lovely, and day was night,
And measles were nice and a lie warn't a lie,
Life would be delight,
-- But things couldn't go right
For in such a sad plight
I wouldn't be I.
If earth was heaven and now was hence,
And past was present, and false was true,
There might be some sense
But I'd be in suspense
For on such a pretense
You wouldn't be you.
If fear was plucky, and globes were square,
And dirt was cleanly and tears were glee
Things would seem fair,
-- Yet they'd all despair,
For if here was there
We wouldn't be we.
e.e. cummings
We as dissatisfied humans spend much of our life saying "if".... I know I have found myself saying lately, "well IF I had a job I could do this" or "IF I was employed I would be this or that". As e.e. cummings displays in his poem "IF", if some things were different, the things we enjoy as they are now would not be the same; thus it would be a continuous circle of dissatisfaction. This is not the way our loving God intended for life to be. So here are my thoughts.
If I had been employed for the past 2 months, I may not have gotten to adjust to being the best wife I could be to my husband. I would not have gotten to spend time with my best friends and family that I have, or done Pilates every morning, or perfected baking bread, or started this blog, or cooked dinner for my friend at the end of a long week.
People have been telling me for weeks that there is a "reason for the season", and I always nodded and said "I know" but never really took time to reflect on that statement. Everything is done in God's perfect time, and in retrospect, I'm getting to see all of the blessings that I have had the chance to enjoy over the past 2 months.
On a separate note, did you see my husband making that delicious tropical martini for me up there? :)
